Khartoum's Future - A Blooming Flower in Arid Environs


This project details the futures of more than 100 cities and towns across the globe as they fight to overcome all the grave environmental challenges of the 21st century. As part of this process, we highlight the future of the African city of Khartoum.



Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, has the potential to transform into a sustainable and prosperous city by leveraging old-school aridland architecture with new forms of eco-smart engineering. The city can also utilize its geographical advantage, being situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers, to implement green infrastructure projects that mitigate environmental issues and enhance urban resilience. For instance, creating wetlands and green corridors along the riverbanks can improve water quality, provide natural flood protection, and create habitats for wildlife. These ecological interventions not only contribute to the health of the environment but also offer recreational spaces for residents, fostering a stronger connection between the community and their natural surroundings.

In addition to ecological engineering, Khartoum's journey towards sustainability requires a shift towards a peaceful and inclusive polity. This involves engaging diverse community stakeholders in the decision-making process, ensuring that urban development plans reflect the needs and aspirations of all residents.
